In this experiment, we placed a small piece of camphor inside a bowl and heated it from below using a candle flame. Watch closely as the camphor slowly disappears – but it doesn’t melt into a liquid! Instead, it turns directly into a visible vapor/gas.

🔬 The Science Behind It:

This process is called Sublimation.
Sublimation is the transition of a substance directly from the solid phase to the gas phase, without passing through the liquid phase.
Why did we use a bowl above a candle?

The candle provides indirect heat to the bowl.

The heat conducts through the bowl and warms the camphor.

The camphor molecules gain enough energy to escape into the air as gas (vapor).

Since there is no direct flame touching the camphor, there is no combustion (burning) happening here. This allows us to observe pure sublimation without the interference of fire, smoke, or soot.
Real-life examples of Sublimation:

Naphthalene balls (mothballs) – used to keep insects away

Dry ice (solid CO₂) – used for cooling and special effects

Iodine crystals

⚠️ Safety Note:
Perform this experiment in a well-ventilated area. Do not inhale the fumes directly. Keep the candle away from any flammable materials. Never leave the candle unattended.
