Was it actually worth it? #3dprinting #toyotalandcruiser
I 3D printed over $580 worth of parts for my Toyota Land Cruiser… but the real question is:
Did I actually save money?
I bought a used 3D printer for $400 and started experimenting with printing interior parts for my cheap Land Cruiser build. Using materials like ASA and PETG, I was able to repair and replace several broken interior components instead of hunting down expensive or discontinued OEM parts.
One of the coolest features of modern 3D printing software is that it tells you exactly how much filament a part will use and how long the print will take, which makes it surprisingly easy to calculate the cost of each part.
In this video I break down:
The real cost of 3D printing car parts
The materials I used (ASA & PETG) for heat resistance
The trial and error that comes with designing parts
And whether 3D printing actually saves money for older vehicles
One example is the custom cupholder I printed for the Land Cruiser. It holds my flashlight, phone, and pen and survived an entire summer in 110° heat without warping.
The truth is, 3D printing isn’t always the cheapest option. Between failed prints, design costs, and time spent measuring parts, it can add up quickly.
But if you own a 30 year old vehicle where parts are discontinued, the ability to design something in the morning and install it the same day is incredibly powerful.
And that’s how I ended up printing over $580 worth of Land Cruiser parts in house.
