The Ice That Turns Directly Into Gas
Dry ice, or solid carbon dioxide, behaves differently from ordinary water ice. At normal atmospheric pressure, dry ice does not melt into a liquid first. When it absorbs enough heat, it changes directly from a solid into a gas through a process called sublimation. This is why dry ice gradually disappears without leaving a liquid puddle. The white fog often associated with dry ice is mainly caused by water droplets formed when the extremely cold carbon dioxide cools the surrounding air. Dry ice has various applications, including cooling and special effects. However, it must be handled carefully because carbon dioxide gas can accumulate in enclosed spaces and reduce the available oxygen.
