Sublimation–Sublimation is when a solid changes directly into a gas. It does not turn into a liquid first.
How it works: The solid takes in heat energy from the air. This extra energy breaks the bonds holding the solid molecules together.
Example: Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) turns straight into a carbon dioxide gas at room temperature.
Example: Snow and ice can slowly vanish into water vapor in cold, dry winter air without melting first.
Deposition–Deposition (sometimes called desublimation) is the exact opposite of sublimation. It is when a gas changes directly into a solid. It skips the liquid phase completely.
How it works: Gas particles cool down and lose energy. They lock together to form a solid structure.
Example: Frost forms on cold grass or windows when water vapor in the air turns straight into ice crystals.
Example: Snowflakes form high in the cold clouds when water vapor changes directly into ice.
