Sublimation π§²
“You didn’t get over the grief, you just worked sixty hour weeks so you’d never have to feel it.” Freud called this sublimation β channeling pain into work, art, or sport instead of feeling it. Vaillant later ranked it one of the healthiest defenses a mind can use. But there’s a catch: if you never come back to the actual feeling, the work just becomes a very productive way of hiding. This one’s for anyone who’s ever called their grief a “great year at work.”
Sigmund Freud, 1930
George Vaillant, Adaptation to Life, 1977
Suggestion: After you pour the pain into the work, stop for five minutes and name what you actually felt underneath it β Vaillant’s research shows sublimation heals when it processes the feeling, not when it outruns it.
