I Finally Understand Why Everyone Is Buying 3D Printers
Is a 3D printer actually worth buying for your garage?
I bought a Bambu Lab 3D printer and put it to work organizing my new US General 72-inch toolbox. In this video, I show how modern 3D printers have changed compared to what 3D printing was like 10 years ago and why today’s machines are essentially plug-and-play.
I used 3D printing to organize four drawers of my toolbox, including custom tool organization and storage solutions. I also compare the cost of printing my own organizers to buying similar products at retail, including popular systems like ToolGrid and Toolbox Widget. In the end, I saved approximately $500 by printing the organizers myself.
But the toolbox organization is only part of the story. If you’re thinking about buying your first 3D printer, I also cover some of the most important questions you should answer before choosing a machine:
• Do you need a heated chamber or will a basic bed-slinger work?
• How important is print volume?
• How much does print size actually limit what you can make?
• Is a modern 3D printer really as easy to use as people claim?
I was surprised by how little the print volume limitation mattered for the projects I wanted to make. For garage organization, automotive tools, workshop accessories, custom parts, and everyday projects, a relatively compact 3D printer can be incredibly useful.
If you’re considering buying a 3D printer for your garage, workshop, or home, hopefully this video helps you understand what you actually need before spending the money.
