How to Reduce CNC Machining Costs for Aluminum Coffee Grinder Housings? DFM Optimization #cncfactory
How to Reduce CNC Machining Costs for Aluminum Coffee Grinder Housings | DFM Optimization
How can you further reduce the CNC machining cost of an aluminum manual coffee grinder housing without sacrificing its appearance or grip?
In this video, a VMT engineer uses a real coffee grinder component to explain why the best cost-reduction opportunity is sometimes not the raw material, but the product design and machining process.
This cylindrical housing is machined from aluminum tubing, which already provides relatively good material utilization. That means there is limited room to reduce cost simply by saving more aluminum. The real cost driver is the detailed surface texture.
In This Video:
– CNC machining of aluminum manual coffee grinder housings
– Why aluminum tubing already minimizes material waste
– How surface texture can become the most expensive machining feature
– Why dense square-grid patterns require more machining time
– Using DFM to identify cost-saving opportunities
– Changing a square-grid texture to a diamond-pattern texture
– Simplifying the machining process while maintaining the required tactile feel
– How design optimization can reduce cycle time and unit cost
Why the Surface Texture Costs More?
The small square-grid texture covering the outside of this housing provides the required appearance and grip, but it is also one of the most time-consuming parts of the machining process.
For a relatively simple cylindrical component, reducing material cost has limited impact because the housing is already produced from aluminum tubing.
To achieve a meaningful cost reduction, the machining process itself must be optimized.
The DFM Solution: Optimize the Texture Design
One possible solution is to replace the original square-grid pattern with a diamond-style texture.
The revised pattern can be produced much more efficiently in a single machining operation, reducing machining time while still maintaining the tactile grip required by the product.
This is a good example of why CNC machining cost reduction should begin with DFM and design optimization, rather than simply asking the supplier to lower the price.
For simple CNC parts, a small change to a non-critical cosmetic feature can sometimes create a much larger cost saving than changing the material or reducing quality requirements.
At VMT, we review the part geometry, material, surface features, machining sequence, and functional requirements to identify practical ways to reduce manufacturing costs without compromising the intended product performance.
