How Sublimation Printing Actually Works
The print on your gym top was a gas before it was a print. It never went through a liquid stage at all, and that one fact explains why sublimation took over performance activewear, and why it fails on half the garments people try to put it on.
In this episode I break down how sublimation printing actually works: the dye starts printed on transfer paper, heat and pressure turn it into a gas, the gas enters the polymer of the polyester fiber and goes solid again inside it, so the color becomes part of the fabric instead of sitting on top. I go through the real press settings (Sawgrass puts polyester apparel at 400°F / 205°C for about 45 seconds, hard substrates like mugs run far longer), what happens when the dwell is too short or too long, why sublimation will not work on a cotton t-shirt, what you genuinely gain over screen printing, the trade-offs (polyester only, light base fabrics, no white on black), and the two failures I see most on production runs: the white line hiding in your seams, and the color that came back looking different from what you saw on screen.
Fabric first, print second. Get that the wrong way around and you pay for it in bulk.
