In this video, I’m trying my first desktop CNC machine — the Makera Z1.
I’ve wanted a machine like this for a long time: something beginner-friendly, precise, reliable, and supported by a strong community.
The Makera Z1 is a compact desktop CNC machine designed for machining materials such as aluminum, brass, acrylic, PCB boards, epoxy, and many other materials.
In this video, I unbox the machine, set everything up, explore the included accessories, and test several of its main features.
I start by machining an aluminum project using multiple cutting tools, then test different workholding methods including side clamps, a positioning square, a vacuum table, and a vise-style fixture.
I also test the laser engraving module, the 4-axis fixture for machining on multiple sides, the dust collection system, remote camera monitoring, smartphone control, and the ionizer module that helps reduce static electricity and prevent dust from sticking all over the machine.
This is only my first experience with the Makera Z1, and there are still many features I haven’t tested yet. I’ll be using this CNC machine in many of my upcoming DIY projects.

⚙️ Makera Z1 Setup:
Connect the machine to power, release the emergency stop button, and turn it on.
The machine will automatically perform its calibration process.
Download the Makera control software from Makera and connect the Z1 to your Wi-Fi network.
You can also control and monitor the machine from your phone.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔩 Workholding Options:
The Z1 supports several different ways to hold your workpiece depending on the project.
For thicker materials such as aluminum blocks, you can use the positioning square together with the side clamps.
For thin and flat materials, the vacuum table provides a clean and convenient way to hold the workpiece in place.
A vise-style fixture is also available for projects that require stronger mechanical clamping.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🛠️ Cutting Tool Setup:
Before installing a cutting tool, attach the tool collar and set it to the recommended position.
The software shows which cutting tool is required for each machining step and lets you know when it’s time to change tools.
This makes multi-tool projects much easier, especially for beginners.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔴 Laser Engraving:
The Makera Z1 also supports laser engraving.
The laser module has a built-in switch that activates once the module is installed correctly.
This allows the same machine to handle both CNC machining and laser engraving projects.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔄 4-Axis Machining:
One of the most interesting accessories is the multi-side machining fixture.
It allows the Z1 to machine or engrave different sides of a workpiece without manually repositioning it each time.
This opens up many possibilities for more complex DIY projects.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
💨 Dust Collection System:
The optional dust collector can be connected directly to the CNC machine.
It supports both dust extraction and a blower function.
The ionizer module also helps reduce static electricity, making dust less likely to stick to the machine and surrounding surfaces.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📷 Remote Monitoring:
The built-in camera allows you to monitor the machining process remotely.
You can check the machine from your computer or phone while it is running.
