Can CMYK 3D Printing ACTUALLY Replace Your Filament Shelf?

Earlier this year, Ratdoux figured out how to use dithering, the same color science behind inkjet printing, to blend 3D printing colors layer by layer. They call is “full spectrum 3d printing” or “CMYK 3D Printing” – and we’ve all seen the hero prints. But I wanted to know if FDM color mixing holds up for the stuff I’d normally use multicolor 3D printing for, without keeping every color of PLA on hand.

To find out, I tested CMYW and CMYK 3D printing with filament bundles from SnapMaker, Prusament, and Sunlu, using the SnapMaker U1 and Prusa Core One INDX tool changers.

And in the process, I found out some very interesting lessons, limitations, and takeaways that I think can help move full spectrum 3d printing and color mixing forward.
