The Printer is Only Half the Story – How 3D UV Printers Work – HeyGears G1X Process

🔥 HeyGears is planning a $200 price increase on selected G1X Series models on October 14 (PDT). If you’re considering one, order before the planned increase to lock in the current price.

*DISCLAMER* The Space Marine models featured in this video provide a familiar reference for critical comparison between commonly known traditionally painted miniatures and this printer’s full-colour output. The accompanying commentary examines colour reproduction, surface finish, detail and limitations, including where the printed results fall short of skilled hand painting.

Any costs displayed alongside the models in this video are estimated printing material costs, included to assess the machine’s running costs. They are not sale prices or offers to supply the models.

Space Marines, Warhammer and the associated designs and insignia are Games Workshop intellectual property. No ownership of those rights is claimed. Neither the model geometry nor the coloured model files used in this demonstration will be shared, sold or otherwise made available to the public.

This video is sponsored by HeyGears, as disclosed, and is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by Games Workshop.

HEYGEARS G1X Preview: A Proper First Look at Full-Colour 3D Printing

The printer is only half the story. My original HeyGears G1X first look introduced the machine, but what does it actually take to get from a 3D file to a full-colour print you’d want on your shelf or gaming table?

This time, we’re getting into the models and the process. Colouring 3D models with Meshy, preparing them in HeyGears Blueprint and following them through the G1X workflow raises some interesting questions for anyone coming from resin 3D printing or FDM. How much of what we’ve already learned carries over when the printer has to handle the colour as well as the shape?

There’s a growing collection of 3D printed miniatures and display pieces on the desk, from Space Marines and Trench Crusade to experiments that get a little more personal. Look closely, and even the word “detail” starts to need a proper conversation. How much of what you’re seeing is actually there?

Full-colour 3D printing opens up a lot of possibilities for miniature painting, collecting and making your own models. Whether you’re interested in the HeyGears G1X as a colour 3D printer or simply wondering where this technology could take us, it’s time to get beyond the machine and have a proper look at what goes into these prints.

What would you want to make first? Let me know in the comments.
