3D printing has honestly become one of the most useful parts of developing my camera products, especially when it comes to prototyping small functional parts.
Being able to design something in CAD and then have a physical version in my hand just a few hours later is invaluable.
For these smaller camera parts, I’ve actually switched from a standard 0.4 mm nozzle to a 0.2 mm nozzle. You can also get 0.6 mm nozzles which are great for printing larger parts quickly, but for the small mechanisms and detailed components I’m designing, the 0.2 mm nozzle gives me so much more precision.
I can print at layer heights down to around 0.08 mm, and the finish you can get from an FDM 3D printer is genuinely impressive.
Looking at this prototype, the layer lines are barely noticeable. The details are incredibly sharp, it feels strong and most importantly, it actually works.
And that’s really why 3D printing is so important for prototyping.
Before I spend hundreds of pounds getting a part CNC machined from aluminium, I can physically test the dimensions, tolerances, button movements and overall design.
I can actually hold the product, use the mechanism and find problems that aren’t always obvious when you’re looking at a CAD model on a screen.
For developing small functional camera parts and prototypes, having a 3D printer has completely changed the way I design things.
And now that this prototype works, the next step is getting it manufactured in aluminium.
